What is You’ve Got Mail?

You’ve Got Mail is a pop-culture newsletter by me, Erin Carlson. I have more than 15 years of experience covering arts and entertainment, starting at The Associated Press in New York City. I am the author of three books: I’ll Have What She’s Having: How Nora Ephron’s Three Iconic Films Saved the Romantic Comedy; the biography Queen Meryl; and No Crying in Baseball: The Inside Story of A League of Their Own — Big Stars, Dugout Drama, and a Home Run for Hollywood. The latter, which arrived in September, is a USA Today National Bestseller and the definitive, first‑ever history of the making of the treasured film that inspired generations of Dottie Hinsons to dream bigger and aim for the sky.

This newsletter, whose title takes inspiration from The Greatest Romantic Comedy of Our Time, offers a space to celebrate the lowbrow-brilliant aspects of culture that some might be keen to dismiss. (It is also a Substack Featured Publication for 2023!) Here, you can comment “Patricia makes coffee nervous” and I won’t look at you funny. Because I already have that quote on my favorite mug.
